Early Family Literacy Grant!!

We are APPROVED!! The Town of Gainesville Public Library is the lead participant in a grant that will bring the Letter People to the preschoolers in the Town of Gainesville! Other participating libraries include Stevens Memorial Library [Attica], Arcade Free Library, and Belmont Free Library in Allegany County, and we are partnering with Literacy West NY. The program will help us reach out to the preschoolers in the community to help them learn skills they will need in Kindergarten.

So, if you have been here over the summer, you will have noticed
1: a new computer desk near the new books
2: a new computer [for us] in the children's area
3: that there is an over flow of donated books in the conference room
4: Becky and Angel are generally very busy
5: a small black bobtail cat streaking through the library
[closely on Angel's heals], or snoozing on the couch
6: that the Summer Reading program was VERY fun [and we made
ice cream in plastic bags!!]
7: I have been way better at posting on our Facebook page!

So, we have a library cat named Bob. He was probably born in the middle/end of June. Now that he comes out from under the couch, he plays with the children in the children's area, chases Becky and Angel around, and comes eagerly when he hears a can opening or his dish tapped. He's come very far since he was found battered and abused outside of the Library at the end of June.

The library is filling up with LOTS of stuff, and one of those things is a computer just for the kids with educational games on it. We have a ton of learning games, I just have to make sure that they are compatible with the operating system, and if not--I'll rewire it to the internet and block it off so that only certain websites can be reached. We'll see how tech-ie I get later this week.

The County has proposed pulling ALL money from the 9 county libraries to meet the Tax Cap for the budget. Stay tuned for a possible All-Wyo-Co library fundraiser...

oh--and for those of you who are interested in a weekly reading program-- the Library of Congress has a cool little blog...check it out here. This wee's story is the basis for the movie "Everything Must Go".

We will have a few stories and some crafty kind of things...so come on in for "One World, Many Stories" and join us at the library! It's that time of year again!

Sorry it has taken me SOOOOO long to finish this process up... I have finally split up the summer reader into 4 different categories! For you adults with toddler and preschoolers, there is now a special program for them! And if you come into the library, your child can sign up to get a certificate from a Assemblyman Dan Burling by filling out his Summer Reading Challenge calendar. Available at the circulation desk!

We will be open Saturday, July 2nd, and closed on the 4th for Independence Day! Hope to see you soon!

Well, now that Spring seems to be determined to be here, why not take a walk through the village and stop on by? We have a BRAND NEW all-in-one scanner/fax/copier/printer!! If you want to add photos on your social networking page...you can!! Just get Angel [me] to help :) Also--we have a NEW goal for our online fundraising event: $750!! We have reached our original goal and now have increased it! Woo HOO! Also-- Wyoming Works has been approved, so there will be new and exciting things happening here soon! I have successfully updated all of the computers, and re-installed the printers [THANK YOU Aaron at PLS !!] and now we are ready to slap some spine labels on the new titles just in time for Saturday! We will be open our regular hours on Saturday, but will be closed on Monday! So if you want to check out Secretariat, or Kung Fu Panda Secrets of the Furious Five, or even Megamind, better get here quick!!

Our thanks to WCJW for letting people in the area know about our open bids for landscaping. We are now closed to accepting offers for this Spring and Summer. We will also be accepting bids for the 2012 season for both Landscaping and Snow Removal.

I would like to thank our local State legislators for helping libraries in NYS get some funding back in this year's Budget.

Soon to be released: Our Community Report! I am working on it right now, so you can see how much we've grown! It will be available on our page here, and in hard copy at the library, and other locations around town.

The Town of Gainesville Public Library is now accepting bids for landscaping services for the Spring of 2011 and 2012. Please contact us by phone, or in person for further details. You can submit a bid by mail, email, or fax. Please, if submitting a bid via fax, call ahead to let us know, as the phone and fax are on the same line. For email submissions, please have "Landscaping" in the subject line.

All bids must be in by 9:45am on Monday, April 11th, 2011, for discussion during the April Library Board Meeting. The Library Manager will be in the library by 9am that morning to prepare for the meeting, so bids can be dropped off to her from 9 am to 9:45am at the Circulation desk. Emails should be submitted so that they are received by the LM before 9:30am on April 14th, please use silverspringslibrary@owwl.org.

Some changes at the library...

Well-- I have been a bit of a busy bee. Right now, I am adding updates to the computers. Last week I added the Google Pack, so that patrons can use the various programs that Google has to offer, including Google Chrome, which is a super-fast streamlined web browser. Today, I am also adding two programs so that you will be able to have access to Overdrive and OWWL2Go right at the public computers! You should really check out what we have--especially if you have a smart phone or web phone of any type... If you need an app so you can download a book and take it with you, just let me know and I will download and install it on any of our computers. Overdrive Media Console and Adobe Digital Editions are new! I am also looking in to getting interactive books for the computers for our Early Readers, and Easy Readers.

On that note-- I will also add that I am working really hard on making our Easy Reader section more parent and student friendly. There will be some new additions to the Call Numbers on all of the books. I am breaking the books down into SS--simple sentences for our Early Readers, RP--Ready for Paragraphs, RC is ready for chapters and EC are early chapter readers. So now, the Call Numbers will be ER SS Author's name. Here's an example:

Legislative Alert!

It seems that we still need a LOT of help! Please, click on the link and send a letter to your local State Assembly person and let them know that we need their support! The website will direct your email to appropriate people, and has a form letter that you can edit for a more personal touch!

What follows is a letter from the Executive Director of NYLA sent out to people who sign up for the Legislative Alerts.

The Education Budget Conference Committee met today at 1:45 pm and announced several agreements on restorations impacting small amounts of money, but nothing on libraries at this point. The process is moving along very quickly so time is running out.

I strongly urge you to spread the word and get your patrons, staff, friends etc to send letters to their state legislators, thanking the Senate for including $4.2 million in Library Aid restoration in their budget proposal and asking the Assembly to match the Senate’s request.

It will be very difficult for the Senate to keep the Library Aid restoration in the final budget proposal without the Assembly’s support.

For those of you who took the time to contact our local elected officials, I thank you! We are only part way there, though--the Senate's proposal put back some of the cuts--and put back almost $4.2 million dollars. The Assembly, however, has decided to NOT make any concessions. Libraries would be receiving less money than was received in 1994. Please, click on the link to be a library advocate here.

This is a quick and simple call for HELP!! We need YOU! The NYS legislature is preparing for another round of cuts, and Public Libraries and SCHOOL libraries are up for the chop! There is a full explanation at the New York Library Association website, the easiest way to get there is to follow the link below! Please follow the link below and choose the "Take Action" button which will send you to a form with a prepared form letter in the queue all ready for your electronic signature...and it will automatically figure out which public officials to go to! If you want to be thorough, make sure you advocate for both preventing the SIXTH funding cut for Public Libraries, AND to prevent the "Diversion" of funds to School Libraries "Library Materials Aid".

I have done it, it's very quick and easy, and I hope everyone out in there who uses any library in NYS will do the same! Thank you!

1040 Tax forms are here!!

We have 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ AND the instructions! We also have a collection of other tax forms, too. We are awaiting the NYS tax forms, but it's a start!

The tax forms have been delayed--or at least part of them. We do not yet have the 1040 instructions--the 1040EZ yes, but the others no. We do have two 1040/1040A instruction booklets, and they are being used and returned. There we changes to the tax laws, so they are printing the instructions NOW, and we should be getting our allotment of instruction booklets in a few weeks. As a bonus, this year's tax day is NOT April 15th, it's April 18th instead. You can look up the intstructions on line, which can be a bit of a nightmare, but if you REALLY want to do your taxes right now, you can come in and at least get the forms!

Why don't you head on down to the library and find out... there may be some coffee a'brewin. Please keep in mind that during the Winter months, our delivery drivers face all of the fun yet-to-be-plowed roadways to bring you movies, books and games from across all 4 counties...so cut them some slack if they aren't there by the time they are in Summer and Spring, and give the nice library clerk or librarian a break too, we have no idea of what he's driving into or out of, and therefore no idea when he may arrive!

In observance of MLK Jr Day, the town of Gainesville Public Library will be closed. We will be OPEN tomorrow, Saturday, our regular hours! We will be open our regular hours on Tuesday, January 18th--which will include Story Time...from 6:30-ish to 7:30 ish depending on when the little folks get here, and how long we can hold their interest. Be on the look out for hot coffee or hot chocolate!

Also--we will be adding bandwidth--which is a very BIG thing! Our computers will be faster, both the public use computers and our own. Well, we **hope** they will be faster. We are on a roll... new books are being put in the system and should be ready as early as today! If there is something that you would like to see the library get for our own collection, drop me an email at gainesville@pls-net.org. I thought I'd put up the shortest one, to make your lives easier.

We are once again reading stories to the little folk, Tuesday evenings at 6:30. Make sure to get a Project Read calendar and keep track of the minutes you read together, or if your child is old enough--how often they read each day. Track it on the calendar and turn it in, and we'll give 'em a prize! They can select from a large assortment of books to keep for their very own. We also have some special bookmarks, and cool pencils.

This year, we hope to do some fun fundraisers, they are still in the works, but I'll keep you posted! If anyone is interested in being a part of Friends of the Town of Gainesville Public Library, please drop me an email, and we'll see what we can do to keep our library up to date and operating at optimal levels!

We're here!! We're open !! It's WARM in here!

I thought I'd throw a new post up there....just to see who's paying attention! Just kidding-- we are working with Literacy WNY on a grant application, it's all been submitted... it would enable us to run a preschool program to help get the little ones ready for Kindergarten! It will be free and open to the public, primarily for three and four years olds, with information for parents, at-home daycare providers, and home-schoolers who can use a little help getting their little ones interested in reading, learning their letters, numbers and shapes! Cross your fingers, say a prayer, or write to your local state representative if you feel it would help. We hope to have some good news early in the spring.

For anyone needing help with homework, we are also starting a juvenile reference section. We have some great stuff for anyone writing papers, or just trying to figure out their science home work! Not all of them are in the system yet, but if you'd like to use them just ask us and we'll get it out for you!

I was a huge fan of Dare Wright's picture books when I was first taken to the Children's section at the Warsaw Public Library. Up those stairs to the little balcony was a wonderful climb, to see the Lonely Doll [Edith] and her friends, the Bears. The search box at the top of the page can allow you to sign into the OWWL catalog and check your status...first time users will need their library card and pin number--if you can't remember your pin, just call us or drop me an email and we can find it for you. Then you can go in and create a user name and password. If you ever forget your password during library hours, you can call us and we'll reset it for you. If you want to stay on our webpage and check things out before you go into the catalog, you can always "right click" on the link for the catalog and choose to open it in a new window or in a new tab.

Fall is in full swing--and story time is still happening on Tuesday's at 10 am! I really need some input as to whether story time should continue... Evergreen and Offline Mode--

Well HOWDY! I thought I'd drop a quick note about what's going on with OWWL...and what it means to you!

1-- We are currently in "offline mode" while the rest of the database gets moved into our new system. This means we need your id to log you onto computers or checkout any materials. If you got your card here at SS, and you happen to forget your card when you come, that's ok because we have you in a paper file and can get your number that way. Offline mode allows us to do some transactions that allow us to stay open, but nothing complex like searching for your card number.

2-- No one can place a hold, not you, not us--not yet. If you would like to place something on hold, talk to us at the desk and we can make a note of it and put it in the system when that function is available to us. That might be Thursday or a few days after that--we'll see how it all goes!

3-- There will not be anything brand spankin' new for a few weeks. Sorry--but with all that the main library HQ is up to, they can't ALSO put in new books and juggle everything else. But don't worry! We do indeed have a shipment [or, er, a few] that are just waiting to be added to the system--including Patterson's newest book, and some interesting tidbits for the "paranormal romance" fans out there. Also some new Sci-fi! Woo hoo! We didn't forget the kidlets either, we have a few new ones for them too, including a really awesome book called "Alienology".

So, please be patient with us as we work the kinks out of the new system, and get used to the new screens and "ease of access". You will all get to choose user names and passwords soon, instead of typing in that dreadfully long barcode.

I'm going to finish up my computer updates, and see you all this afternoon! Remember, we are still having story time until the first snow--hopefully it will stop raining soon so you all can make it! For timelier updates, you can also check HERE.

Story time is here again~~for the fall, and I will be picking out some good fall-ish stories. There may be an autumn or school theme...or perhaps just the woods. Also--for those of you out there with allergies, and I know you're having a good time sneezing this morning-- you can check out Pollen.com and get an idea of what little allergens are in the air anywhere! You can type in a zipcode or pick a city and find out what's bugging you or will bug you, or bugging some one you know. And since cold and flu season is upon us--check out the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] for the latest RELIABLE information on what 'bugs' are going around.

CANCELLATION OF BOARD MEETING FOR 9/13

Our regular Board meeting, which is open to the public, has been CANCELED today. The meeting will take place next Monday--that's September 20th, 2010, at 10am.

Tomorrow's story time remains as scheduled! We will have Story Time tomorrow!

Computer updates...

Every Tuesday, after Story time and before lunch--I update the computers. For you, the patron, this means that they may run a little sluggishly at first, and you get to see new pages at the start of whatever browser you are using. You can navigate by using the tabs at the top of the screen, below the Yahoo! Toolbar and reach the OWWL catalog and OWWL homepage by just left-clicking on the tab that says "OWWL.org". I have also added our own website so that I can get information to you more quickly.

The Evergreen change-over will not be happening this month. What is Evergreen? It is the new database that Pioneer Libraries will be using to manage the collections of the 42 libraries. What does this mean to you? Not much yet, but in the future, navigating the OWWL catalog on line will be much simpler, and there will be more features for you to simplify and streamline your experience. For example, you will be able to sign-in to OWWL with a USER NAME and PASSWORD of your choosing! You will use your card number at first, and be provided with a password, and then when you login in for the first time you will be able to choose your own. No more memorizing that doggone long number and pin, [and kudos to those of you who do!] you'll be able to change it whenever you like. We at the circulation desk will be able to look up your user name, should you forget what it is, and we can reset your password for you.

What else will Evergreen do for you? Well, it will let us help more than one patron at the same time, we can check out books to you AND do like NINE other things, too. If you decide to keep on browsing after you bring us a book, we can check it out to you, you can go back to the shelves, and we can open a new tab and help someone else. It's like using multiple tabs when cruising the web on Firefox, IE or Google Chrome. We can also pay bills, see what books you have out, and update your user information all from one screen. It rocks. But I guess that's only important to those of us on the other side of the counter, or those of you waiting in line. It means a little more time at first to get through checkout, until we've all [every one of us from Ontario through Livingston counties] has got the swing of things, and once we're used to it, a much more happy and streamlined experience for all involved.

The change over is being held off until October, this way the bugs can be hammered out and we will not have any lag or lapse in services to you in the meantime. Better to fix it all up and have it really ready for you than to give you a gift that's only half finished. [If you're going to do it, do it right, and do it once.]

Summer time Story hour...

Don't forget to wrangle the young 'uns to story time this, and every, Tuesday morning at 10am! We open the library early, read a few stories, and then let the little people browse & color. Adults can browse the collection or listen in on the stories. Come one, come all!

A whole new website for us, and a fresh start with perhaps an easier way to navigate as well. Sorry about the troubles with the last site...not sure why it was always "under construction"-- I deal with enough construction on the way to work to have to put up with it at work. I am sure there are others out there who feel the same.
